Community Feedback on Walter Reed Prototype

In 2013, Arlington County completed a thorough review of the Walter Reed prototype “Super Stop,” gathering community feedback on the design, cost, operation, and more.

Weather Protection
• Inadequate rain/wind protection
• Glass canopy retains heat

Accessibility
• High curb causes difficulty utilizing wheelchair ramps

Other Layout/Design
• Unclear boarding area and insufficient pedestrian space
• Lack of standing room
• Stainless steel seating uncomfortable and not water repellent

Cost
The Walter Reed Prototype’s costs were widely viewed as unreasonable and exorbitant. The new budget has significantly reduced the project’s costs. CPRO will provide additional details in future articles.

Updated Design

In 2014, the County Manager presented an updated plan for the transit stations that addressed the community’s concerns. The following design changes will be implemented with the new stations this fall.

Weather Protection
✓ Larger, lower canopy for better rain protection
✓ Added walls/windshields
✓ Patterned roof provides shading, eases direct sunlight

Accessibility
✓ Raised curb height provides near-level boarding and improved operation with wheelchair ramps

Other Layout/Design
✓ 90 – 120 ft platform clarifies boarding area and increases pedestrian space where available
✓ More comfortable seating and leaning rails
