GIANT at Penrose Square OPENS

The three year wait is over. The brand new, 51,000 Square Food Giant Grocery Store is open as of today, Friday, 6/24, 6am.

Giant is literally rolling out the red carpet for the community to come and experience the new store embedded into the (also brand new) Penrose Square building complex.

Special Grand Opening Events, including wine tasting, tapas sampling and prize raffles are planned on:
Friday, June 24th, 3-7pm, Saturday, June 25th: 12-5pm and Sunday June 26th: 12-5pm

Be one of 70 lucky shoppers to win a bag of Giant Brand Products at one of the opening raffles or the one to win free groceries for an entire month (one drawing each day 6/24-6/26).

CPRO welcomes the return of the Giant Grocery Store in the Pike Town Center as a milestone in the revitalization of our commercial core [map].
Essential goods and services will be available again within walkable distance (1/4 mile) for more than 4000 households (1/2 mile > 6500 households). The store is conveniently accessible with public transportation (Metro Pike Ride and ART lines 7445 stopping at S. Barton St., ART lines 42, stopping at S. Courthouse St. and  77, stopping at S. Walter Reed St.) . Car drivers will find plenty of shared parking space on site and with immediate access to the store. Currently, parking is free.
The Giant Pharmacy is already operating in the new store.

Lord what a HIKE to that place, if you do not have a car — and it’s on the 2nd floor so you are at the mercy of unventilated elevators to go up or down to the parking level or the store. This should be called the User Unfriendly Giant’s.
Not everything is stocked — like….. WHERE are the paper cups?
    - Some of the employees are clueless– let’s hope that changes as they get used to working there.
    - WHY is there just ONE skeensy little overhead sign telling us where EVERYTHING is located? How about putting that info on all the shopping carts, like it used to be at the old store there!
    - Glad it’s back but I am not giving up on going to Harris Teeter, by any means.

Indeed! I stand corrected (it felt longer though, didn’t it?)

I love having a store I can walk to again – it’s good exercise. Using an elevator to get to the store is different, but I have no problem with it. I find the overhead signs very easy to read and helpful. I like Harris Teeter, but I prefer walking to a store rather than using buses.
